Backyard games, that is. Croquet, anyone?
If you’re thinking of flamingo mallets and hedgehog balls, with the Red Queen yelling “Off with her head!” in Alice in Wonderland— or you have no idea what we’re talking about—you may be surprised to learn how much fun to is to play croquet.
You can buy a new set for less than a tank of gas, set-up is simple, and the rules are easy to learn. The right mix of friendly competition and hilarity makes it enjoyable for just about everyone. Offensive and defensive strategies keep things interesting. (Beware the dreaded “roquet” from opponents!)
By the way, competitive croquet clubs have public matches all over the country, with one of the biggest events here in the Wine Country of Sonoma County, California. The Croquet Invitational & Charity Auction draws elite players and wine industry heavyweights in May for a match and a high-rolling wine auction to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Burn off a few of those barbeque calories with a relaxing game of backyard croquet. Or find a local club match to see how the experts play.
Do you have a funny croquet story to share?
